The original marble sculpture was carved from marble and dates all the way back to between 100 and 300 BC! It is most commonly considered to be a representation of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of sexuality and love. It has also been linked to Amphitrite, Greek goddess of the sea due to its original location on the Maeander River on the island of Melos. The sculptor of this splendid work of Greco-Roman art is Alexandros of Antioch.
